Community initiative to halt expansion of the local Catalyst industrial waste dump.

The Washington site

To the Powell River Legacy group:

i am wondering where in Washington the fly ash is currently going.

thanks

Reply from PR Legacy:

The flyash does not currently go to Washington, it is being dumped right here in Wildwood and space is running out as we speak. Until recently, Catalyst sent their flyash to a state of the art facility in Washington State with a company known as Rabanco Allied Wastes Industries Inc. In Washington, Rabanco deposits waste at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill, a space in the desert far away from homes that meets or exceeds all requirements set out in the province's "Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste."

TAM and Catalyst commitments

To Powell River Legacy group:

Could you please tell me how Catalyst paper is associated with Third Avenue Management from New York?

Is the company committed to keeping our mill open for the thirty plus years that the landfill permit covers, or could they just use the boilers and the landfill to dispose of mill waste from other places, and close our mill down?

Regional District Landfill position

Whilst I realise this is a completely different type of landfill. I thought this statement from a community letter in support of a new landfill at Ashcroft was significant. This letter was written by the PRRD to the GVRD in July 2006 and contains the following statement, "Reliance on the Cache Creek landfill for disposal of this residual waste is a necessity for the PRRD due to the lack of disposal facilities within our own jurisdiction. Our heavy rainfall, local topography, and rural households dependence on individual domestic wells or small community water systems, have precluded us from finding a landfill site that is environmentally and publicly acceptable,"
If this is so, why then would we allow a potentially toxic landfill to operate and EXPAND in such close proximity to a residential community.

Taxes, Tubs and Ashes

To Powell River Legacy group:

How many of you trouble makers have woodstoves? Are you willing to pay 40% more taxes when your troublemaking shuts the mill down and puts all of the workers out of work?Did your small minds even bother to look into the fact that a CEMENT tub has been built to put the ash into? How are ashes going too go through cement?

Tell that trouble maker that moved here from Vancouver and is starting all this to go back where she came from. Her starting trouble and getting sued by Formasa already should show her what a good for nothing she is.

RE: Status of Catalyst Paper- Powell River Division application to amend the Wildwood landfill permit.

Dear Ms Warriner,

It seems that the procedure to follow when a company wishes to apply for a waste management permit, or an amendment to a permit, are still being created---it seems to be a dynamic process to establish an open and fair system; at least that is my hope.

Coercion

To Powell River Legacy group:

I an owner of a small business in Powell River who was recently phoned and visited by some mill people who are going around engaging in corporate thuggery by trying to intimidate any local business owner who signed the landfill petition. I know I am not the only one who has been told to remove my name and remove petitions from my business or that my business will be boycotted. It seems to me that because they can't argue with the facts, they must resort to intimidation and possibly violence. Catalyst's attempt to "divide and conquer" will not work. Truth will win over coercion.

I just felt like someone needed to say this. What we need is a public meeting so the truth can spoken out in the open and that rumors like “you will all lose your jobs if we don't put the landfill in Wildwood” can be traced back to their source. I'd like to know who is feeding this fire of lies.

Watchdog newsletter

To Powell River Legacy group:

I was informed that my name was on a list called "watchdog" (something like that name) The person informed me that this site is about being in favor of closing the mill here in Powell River. Do you know anything about this web page? I agree with limiting of the land fill but i do not want the mill to be closed. Can you tell me how i can find this web page?

Facts

To Powell River Legacy group:

I can't help but notice that in your basic fact section you haven't included any numbers that show the actual concentration levels of fly ash in the air in and around the landfill at any given time. Fly ash continues to be disposed of there, so you must have air quality numbers that you are very concerned about.

I am very curious to know what these numbers are and how long an average person would have before their health start to fail them while living in Wildwood. This seems like an extremely important fact that you have missed.

Posting these concentration level numbers on this website would be helpful for everyone who is concerned about this issue. It is very frustrating reading letter after letter of people opposing the landfill with no proof to back them up. Everyone has an opinion, but facts are facts.

Thanks for your time.
