Letter 29: Enough is Enough!

Catalyst Paper, Powell River Div.

Powell River, BC,

Dear Dr. Barkowski,

I am writing to voice my strenuous opposition to the proposed Catalyst landfill expansion in Powell River.

This landfill was supposed to have been capped long ago when the community was made aware of contamination of groundwater at the site when the company was owned by MacMillan Bloedel. To come back after poisoning the community once, and propose to add further weight on the cap that was supposed to stem the flow of contaminants into the groundwater and into Wildwood drinking water is a grave, possibly criminal error.

Re: Wildwood Landfill Expansion, Powell River, BC

Dear Dr. Barkowski,

The Sierra Club of Canada, Malaspina Group, has a number of concerns about Catalyst’s proposal to expand the landfill site at Wildwood, Powell River. We do not feel that the Environmental Assessment Report by Golder and Associates adequately addresses the potential for contaminants to enter the local atmosphere and ground water.

Dear Dr. Barkowski:

I wrote you on March 18, 2007 expressing my concerns about the application to amend (expand) the permit for fly ash waste disposal in Wildwood.

You responded by agreeing that you thought that the  health of our residents was important and that you wanted to manage the site responsibly.
